We at Sanvi Cotton are delighted to bring you the first part of our series on the Fabrics of India!

In this video, we explain that Indian textiles represent a beautiful blend of art, history, and culture. We believe that every corner of India tells a distinct story about these fabrics. We find a great variety of textiles here, ranging from the silk threads of Banaras to the bales of swadeshi Khadi. These textiles are not merely cloth; they embody countless narratives of Indian culture and diversity which have spread across the world today.

We noted that different types of fabrics have developed in every single region of India.

Regional Textile Variations

Hilly and Snowy Regions: In these areas, especially woollen clothes are used. Consequently, the local people created garments like Pashmina, Shahtoosh shawls, and various other woollen clothes, turning India into a major market for woollen garments.

Rajasthan and Gujarat: In parts of the country like Rajasthan and Gujarat, you will find garments featuring bright colours and extensive embroidery.

Coastal Regions: Along the coast, clothes that are relatively mild and light-coloured have become famous, particularly those made of cotton and silk.

Silk and Saree Production

We discussed the key areas where silk is extensively woven, including regions such as Assam, Banaras, Mysore, Surat, and Kanchipuram. These regions are particularly well-known for their cotton and silk sarees. Furthermore, many famous types of sarees, such as the Banarasi saree, Patola, Baluchari, and Pochampalli, are found originating from these areas.

We promise that we will continue to provide you with information about Indian textiles and the various associated arts through our upcoming videos. Please do not forget to follow our Instagram handle, Sanvi Cotton, for more content.

Finally, we would love to hear from you! Please tell us in the comments section which area you are watching this video from, what type of fabric is famous in your region, and which types of fabric are most widely used.
